An AI visibility audit operates differently from a traditional SEO audit. Google sees you as a collection of pages; LLMs see you as an entity. That distinction changes everything about how the audit is conducted. The 20-point checklist below lets you objectively measure your brand's current standing across five critical areas.

Score each item: 1 if there are no issues, 0 if there is a problem or you are unsure. Compare your total against the scoring framework at the end of this post.

Area 1: Entity Clarity

For LLMs, existing is not the same as being searchable. For an AI model to describe you with confidence, it needs to see consistent, non-contradictory signals about who you are. The four items in this area measure the foundations of your entity representation.

Item 1 — Brand Name Consistency: Is your brand name written identically across your website, social media, directories, and press materials? This includes capitalization, abbreviations, and regional language variants. What good looks like: A single canonical spelling across all digital surfaces. Red flag: Three different forms — such as "ARGEO," "Argeo," and "argeo.ai" — used interchangeably.

Item 2 — Category Definition: Is the category your brand belongs to stated consistently across all platforms? Overlapping categories like "AI consultancy," "digital marketing agency," and "tech company" confuse LLMs. What good looks like: The same primary category expression everywhere. Red flag: Your homepage, About page, and LinkedIn profile each presenting a different category.

Item 3 — Schema Markup: Are Organization, LocalBusiness, or other relevant schema types implemented on your website? Are the @type, name, description, url, and sameAs fields populated? What good looks like: A complete Organization schema that passes Google's Rich Results Test. Red flag: No schema at all, or schema present but sameAs references missing.

Item 4 — Wikipedia / Wikidata Presence: Does your brand have a Wikipedia page or at minimum a Wikidata record? A significant portion of LLMs draw from these sources. What good looks like: A verified, up-to-date Wikidata Q-item record. Red flag: No Wikipedia, no Wikidata, and no reliable external source linking to either.

Area 2: Content Architecture

LLMs look at the depth and structure of your content to infer authority. Fragmented, shallow, or structurally inconsistent content does not send an authority signal.

Item 5 — Pillar Content: Do you have comprehensive, long-form guide content for each of your core service or product categories? Each should be at minimum 1,500 words and treat the topic in depth. What good looks like: At least one pillar page per core service, linked to supporting cluster content. Red flag: All service pages under 300 words.

Item 6 — FAQ Schema: Are your most frequently asked questions marked up with FAQPage schema? LLMs favor structured question-and-answer content. What good looks like: At least 5 Q&A pairs per pillar page, schema-marked. Red flag: No FAQ content on the site, or FAQ content exists but schema is not applied.

Item 7 — Structured Data Coverage: Are appropriate schema types applied to your product, service, person, and organization pages? What percentage of your site traffic does schema coverage reach? What good looks like: More than 80% of critical pages include structured data. Red flag: Only the homepage has schema; all other pages are completely bare.

Item 8 — Heading Hierarchy: Do your H1, H2, and H3 headings form a coherent information architecture? Do the headings clearly express the subject matter of the content — or do they contain marketing slogans instead? What good looks like: Each page structured with a single H1, logical H2 sections, and H3 subheadings that describe the topic. Red flag: Pages with multiple H1s, or headings that are abstract, keyword-free marketing phrases.

Area 3: Citation and Authority Signals

Whether LLMs trust a brand depends heavily on how that brand is referenced externally. Your own content cannot be the only data source.

Item 9 — External Citations: How many times has your brand been cited by name from independent journalists, analysts, or industry publications? What good looks like: At least 10 independent citations from different domains in the past 12 months. Red flag: All citations come from your own press releases or paid placements.

Item 10 — Journalist Citations: Have reporters or bloggers quoted your brand as an expert source? This kind of editorial citation carries particular weight in LLM authority evaluation. What good looks like: At least 3 editorial quotes in recognized publications. Red flag: No quotes at all; all media presence is self-produced content.

Item 11 — Industry Directory Presence: Is your brand listed in relevant, credible directories (G2, Capterra, Clutch, local chambers of commerce, etc.) and is that information current? What good looks like: Complete, up-to-date profiles in at least 5 relevant directories. Red flag: No directory listings, or existing listings contain outdated, inconsistent information.

Item 12 — Anchor Text Consistency: What anchor texts do sites linking to you use? Do inbound links consistently include your brand name and core service terms? What good looks like: Brand name anchor text used consistently across the majority of inbound links. Red flag: Most links use "click here" or irrelevant terms.

Area 4: Competitive Positioning

AI systems frequently answer queries in comparative contexts. The response to "X or Y?" directly shapes your perception position.

Item 13 — Competitor Comparison in AI Responses: Have you tested queries like "What is the difference between [your brand] and [competitor]?" How do LLMs position you? What good looks like: Clear, accurate, and competitively advantageous positioning. Red flag: The LLM doesn't recognize you or places you in the wrong category.

Item 14 — Category Ownership Signals: Do queries for your core service category surface your name? For example, are you listed when someone asks about firms in your field? What good looks like: Consistent inclusion in core category queries. Red flag: You are entirely invisible in category queries while competitors surface prominently.

Item 15 — Differentiator Message Reflection: Do your key differentiators — pricing, expertise, geography, approach — appear in LLM responses about your brand? What good looks like: LLMs accurately convey your strongest differentiators. Red flag: The LLM describes you identically to competitors, with no differentiation highlighted.

Item 16 — Brand Name Disambiguation: Does your brand name get confused with other brands, generic terms, or unrelated industries? Do LLMs reliably identify the correct entity? What good looks like: Your name is unique; LLMs consistently identify the right company. Red flag: The LLM confuses you with another company or cannot respond due to ambiguity.

Area 5: Monitoring and Maintenance

GEO is not a one-time project. Models update, training data changes, and perception drifts. The items in this area ensure your brand's visibility holds over time.

Item 17 — Regular AI Response Testing: Do you have a documented testing routine where you ask LLMs questions about your brand? What good looks like: At minimum a monthly — preferably weekly — testing cycle with recorded responses. Red flag: No testing has ever been done, or no one knows when testing last occurred.

Item 18 — Perception Drift Detection: Are you tracking meaningful changes in responses compared to previous test periods? Do you have a system that captures those changes? What good looks like: A time-stamped test archive with a comparison log noting changes. Red flag: No historical test data; no way to measure change.

Item 19 — Content Update Frequency: How often are your pillar content pages, FAQ sections, and schema markup reviewed and updated? Stale content causes LLMs to surface outdated information. What good looks like: Core pages reviewed and updated within the past 6 months. Red flag: Main content pages not updated in over 18 months.

Item 20 — Adaptation to New LLMs: When new models like DeepSeek, Grok, or Mistral enter the landscape, do you add them to your monitoring scope? Is your strategy limited only to ChatGPT? What good looks like: Monitoring routine covers at least 5 different LLM platforms. Red flag: All attention focused solely on ChatGPT; no other models ever tested.

Scoring Framework

Once you have evaluated all items, calculate your total score:

16-20 Points — Strong Foundation: Your AI visibility rests on solid ground. LLMs should be describing you consistently and reliably. Priority: maintain your monitoring routine and add new models to your tracking scope.

10-15 Points — Improvement Needed: The basic structure exists but significant gaps remain. Focus on the items where you scored 0, prioritizing entity clarity and citation signal deficiencies first.

5-9 Points — Serious Risks: AI systems are likely describing your brand inconsistently, ambiguously, or inadequately. An urgent GEO strategy is needed. Continuing to produce content without fixing structural issues in core areas will not solve the problem.

0-4 Points — Urgent Action Required: Your brand is either absent from AI systems or actively misrepresented. This may mean competitors in your category are visible while you are not. A comprehensive GEO audit and strategy plan is required.

Next Steps

This checklist surfaces your brand's current state. But identifying problems and implementing a systematic resolution plan are two different things. Rather than addressing missing items one by one in isolation, starting with the most critical area produces faster and more durable results.

Entity clarity and content architecture always come first — because citation signals and competitive positioning cannot function without a strong foundation in those two areas. When the foundation is sound, other areas improve far more quickly.
